Modupe Akinola, Associate Professor of Management and Director of the Bernstein Center for Leadership and Ethics at Columbia Business School, led chairs, senior faculty, and other academic leaders in a discussion about recognizing, understanding, and supporting BIPOC faculty colleagues in managing and utilizing stress in the department and across the university.

Akinola guided the Faculty Advancement Network community in answering questions such as:

  • What conflicts, uncertainties, and pressures are unique for your BIPOC colleagues?

  • How do we address and overcome our colleagues’ stress so that more people can feel welcome and thrive in environments where there is little diversity?

  • How might we change our own stress mindsets to better understand and support our BIPOC colleagues?

The session helped participants in understanding where minoritized faculty are experiencing organizational life differently because of the unique stressors they face. Akinola concluded with a list of ways individuals can support BIPOC faculty and lead lasting change in the academic department.
