with Román Liera and Damani White-Lewis
april 29, 2022
In this workshop, Prof. Román Liera and Prof. Damani White-Lewis presented research on the role of typical faculty hiring criteria and practices that cement racial and ethnic inequalities in the professoriate.
In the first part of this session, our workshop leaders frame whiteness in higher education. They dive into three areas of whiteness in faculty hiring, in particular: niceness, fit, and hierarchical networks. After a breakout activity (not in the recording), Liera and White-Lewis offer strategies and solutions in faculty hiring that centralize racial equity.
